The Republican Party supports Johnson's re-election as Speaker of the House
The Republican Party in the US House of Representatives unanimously supported incumbent Chairman Mike Johnson's re-election to this position in the new House of Congress. Axios reports this.
According to the portal, Johnson won the nomination “without opposition, despite threats from hardliners to nominate another candidate.” It should be noted that an important role in this was played by President-elect Donald Trump, who behind closed doors declared his “absolute support” for the current speaker.
The final vote on Mr. Johnson's candidacy will take place on January 3, when the new House of Representatives begins work. To be re-elected to office, he will need 218 votes in support.
