The Polish President gave the reason why Scholz suddenly called Putin
Polish President Andrzej Duda accused German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz of trying to exclude US President-elect Donald Trump from negotiations on Ukraine's future. His words were quoted by Bloomberg.
He stated that Scholz's call was not intended to motivate Vladimir Putin to enter negotiations aimed at peacefully resolving the conflict, as the prime minister himself said.
“I believe this is an effort to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine before Donald Trump takes office,” Duda said.
He believes that Scholz is concerned about the possibility of signing unfavorable agreements for Germany with the United States under the Trump administration and is trying to be proactive. Germans' biggest fear, Duda said, is that Donald Trump will force them to buy gas from the US.
Putin talks to Scholz
A day earlier, Scholz said that he considered the right decision to hold a conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, despite criticism from European colleagues.
