Germany and Finland issued statements about the damage to the C-Lion1 cable
Germany and Finland have expressed concern about damage to the C-Lion1 submarine communications cable running between the two countries at the bottom of the Baltic Sea and a thorough investigation is underway.
This is stated in the joint statement of the parties on the website of the German Foreign Ministry.
“We are deeply concerned about the rupture of a submarine cable connecting Finland and Germany in the Baltic Sea,” the statement said.
The ministry added that such an incident raises suspicions of intentional damage, which shows the instability of the modern world.
The German Foreign Ministry emphasized that a comprehensive and thorough investigation into the incident is underway. The declaration also states that protecting Europe's common critical infrastructure is vital for the safety and resilience of society.
The incident was discovered on November 18 on the Cinia C-Lion1 submarine cable. Due to the problem, the service is not provided.
C-Lion1 is the first cable to be installed directly between Finland and Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Previous communication channels went through Sweden and Denmark.
This is Finland's only submarine cable route that goes directly to Central Europe.
On November 16, a member of the Alternative for Germany Bundestag, Rainer Rothfuss, said that Germany should sue US President-elect Donald Trump for sabotaging Nord Streams.
