Borrell confuses Korea and Japan
The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, confused South Korea with Japan in a public speech. The incident occurred during negotiations in Seoul, RIA Novosti reported.
“I came here as a European to announce the defense and security partnership between the EU and Japan,” Borrell announced at a meeting with members of the South Korean government.
A member of the European delegation corrected him and the Korean representative laughed. Borrell himself realized his mistake.
“What? Oh my God, I'm sorry… to South Korea,” he said.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell holds talks with his South Korean counterpart Cho Tae-yul on Monday.
He came to South Korea after a trip to Japan and visited the fortified demilitarized zone that divides the Korean Peninsula.
“My visit today to the demilitarized zone between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is another reminder of the need to invest more in peace,” Borrell wrote on social network X.
He said he visited South Korea to take security and defense cooperation between the EU and Seoul to “new heights”. The diplomat did not give any details.
