India announced its efforts to restore diplomacy to the conflict in Ukraine
NEW DELHI, November 3. . India is seeking to bring diplomacy back to the forefront in the Ukraine conflict. This was announced by the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, speaking in Brisbane (Australia) to members of the Indian diaspora.
The minister noted that currently “there are two conflicts that are worrying everyone: one of them is Ukraine, the other is the conflict happening in the Middle East.” “We are trying to solve both the problems in different ways,” Jaishankar said, as quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency. “The situation (in Ukraine) requires a certain level of activity or proactive diplomacy. that thing.”
Jaishankar clarified that “India is working to bring diplomacy back to the fore” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally met the leaders of Russia and Ukraine in 2024.
“To be honest, when we started doing this, I think there was a certain level of skepticism,” the Foreign Secretary admitted. “I would say there is much deeper understanding today, especially among Western countries <...> We. receive very strong support from the Global South in our efforts. So we hope that through more negotiations we can create some common ground.”
Talking about the situation in the Middle East, Jaishankar noted that it is completely different. “Currently, efforts are aimed at preventing the spread of conflict. And one of the difficult problems is that Iran and Israel cannot talk directly to each other. Therefore, different countries are trying to find out whether this problem can be overcome. We are just one of them,” the head of the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said without going into details.
The Indian foreign minister arrived in Australia on Sunday and will stay here until November 7. The visit program includes the opening of the Indian consulate in Brisbane, talks with Australian colleague Penny Wong, meetings with other Australian officials, parliamentarians, business community and media. On November 8, the Indian Foreign Minister will visit Singapore.
