First Descendants and MapleStory helped Nexon achieve record sales
South Korean company Nexon reports record financial results for the third quarter of 2024 (July 1 to September 30). The company's vertical growth was 15% and net revenue increased 13% year-on-year to 135.6 billion yen (about $873 million).
Nexon highlighted three key franchises that propelled the company to success in the third quarter. These are Dungeon & Fighter, MapleStory and EA Sports FC (Nexon owns EA Sports FC Online for free). Additionally, the Dungeon & Fighter franchise saw a 142% increase in performance after the app's successful launch in the Chinese market.
The first descendant also made a significant contribution to the development of Nexon. The shooter launched successfully at the end of June around the world and performed especially well in Western markets – they accounted for 75% of the game's total revenue. In the near future, Nexon will continue to update the game with new content based on gamers' feedback. For example, at their request, they will add the physical properties of individual parts of the heroines' bodies.
Nexon also noted its contribution to the localization of games and their adaptability to different markets. For example, MapleStory, which was initially exclusive to Korea, grew 23% in Q3 2024, with 40% of total revenue coming from overseas players. Adaptations for foreign audiences include crossovers: the attention of Japanese players was attracted by an event in which MapleStory was supplemented with content from the Demon Slayer manga.
In addition, the start of the fourth season in the shooter The Finals attracted a new wave of gamers to the game. Overall, Nexon plans to continue growing, according to company executives.
“Over the next few quarters, we intend to continue investing in our long-term vision to achieve incremental growth in revenue and operating income by strengthening our existing franchises and expanding our intellectual property portfolio.”
