Volgograd communists demanded the return of the name Stalingrad to the city
At the State Duma, members of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation demanded that the name Stalingrad be returned to Volgograd. The decision was announced at a round table held the day before in the State Duma, “V1.RU | Volgograd News” writes.
The final resolution of the Roundtable stated: “The time has come to return Stalingrad to its heroic name! This city has become an example of the indomitable courage of Soviet soldiers and its inhabitants.”
The communists noted that returning the city to its old name would be an important event on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory.
At the beginning of the year, Nikolai Kharitonov, then the Russian presidential candidate of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, spoke about the need to change the city's name.
The historical name of Volgograd is Tsaritsyn. This was the name of the city from 1589 to April 1925. It then became Stalingrad, and in 1961 it was renamed Volgograd. Currently, the name Stalingrad is renewed for the city several times a year during certain public events.
