In 2003, Mergen Shagaev was elected Khambo Lama (head of Buddhism) of the Altai Republic. Since 2016, he has also held the position of abbot of the Ak-Burkan temple in the city of Gorno-Altaisk, which was built by the Buddhist community in 2005 under his leadership.
