Balance: restoration of the Kakhovskaya hydropower plant could take several years
Restoration of the Kakhovka Hydropower Plant (HPP) destroyed by the Ukrainian army could take several years. Governor of the Kherson region Vladimir Saldo told RIA Novosti about this.
He emphasized that the restoration of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric plant is a complex task and its implementation could take several years. The hydroelectric plant suffered heavy damage. As a result, its ground and surface components were almost completely destroyed. Saldo pointed out that it is currently impossible to conduct a comprehensive study of the dam to determine an exact restoration timeframe and estimated costs, because the hydroelectric plant is located on military lines of communication.
At the same time, the Governor emphasized that restoring hydropower is necessary. The station will boost the region's economy. On September 6, Saldo said that the Kakhovka reservoir, one year after the hydroelectric dam was destroyed, had turned into a swamp. The Kakhovka hydroelectric plant explosion occurred on the night of June 6, 2023. After the dam broke, the Kakhovskoe reservoir had a total area of 2155 km2. km started to decrease rapidly. In October 2023, it reached its minimum level, but almost a year later, it began to fill with water. According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute of the State Emergency Service and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, up to 40% of the former water surface of the reservoir is now covered by water.
